Evaluation of a Mouthguard Customized Using the Occlusal Position during Maximal Grip Strength to Improve Sports Performance. A Case Report

Abstract: Two customized mouthguards were developed for a 35-year-old male kickboxer. These were identical in thickness (the vertical dimension between the upper and lower jaws), the material, and similar in form (visible outline); however, one mouthguard was designed such that the horizontal jaw position was determined by the maximal grip strength obtained by the subject during the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test. Both mouthguards were satisfactory in terms of how they felt during wearing and breathing; however, the subject ach… Show more

“…PD is characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compac-ta [11]. I have previously reported the relationship between dental health and other pathological conditions [7] [12] [13] [14] [15]. A systemic disease, in which dentistry is involved in the cause, may be considered intractable.…”

“…In results suggesting that restoration of the occlusal support might prove effective against ADL impairment, approximately 56% of the people in the denture group demonstrated improvements in the ADL, whereas no improvement was observed in the no-denture group. All the dentures were fabricated by referring to the Bi-Digital O-Ring test [29] [30]; the occlusal position of the denture was determined by assessing the strongest grip strength over [12]. When grip strength was difficult to detect because of weak muscles and other reasons, an indirect method was used in which a third person was interposed between the patient and the examiner [29].…”

“…The material of the denture was chosen very carefully in terms of color and metal, as well as its occlusal matching condition to find the most appropriate things for the patient, and those were determined by using the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test (Fujii, 2017;Fujii, 2019) (Figure 3). According to the result of the test, the denture materials which features maximized the patient's grip strength were chosen.…”

“…The occlusion and mandibular positions affect both full-body functioning and sports performance (Watanabe et al, 1998;Fujii, 2016;Fujii, 2017;Fujii, 2019;Fujii, 2020;Miyaji, 2020;Mehta, & Forgione, 1996). In this report, I describe the effectiveness of dental treatment in a runner with intermittent low back and hip pain.…”
