Evaluation of a Gastric Lavage Method for Use on Largemouth Bass

Abstract: The efficiency and delayed mortality caused by a new gastric lavage device was evaluated for use on largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides. A 12‐V electric pump was specially fitted to flush stomach contents from largemouth bass larger than 200 mm. The device was easily operated by a single person and removed more than 90% of stomach contents. The lavage technique caused no immediate mortality of largemouth bass. Delayed (7‐d) mortality of largemouth bass undergoing gastric lavage was not significantly differen… Show more

“…In addition, when testing the efficiency of the method with P. pappenheimi, no deaths were recorded during or after the GL. These results are consistent with several other studies using different species (Light et al 1983, Hakala and Johnson 2004, Wanner 2006, Shuman and Peters 2007.…”

“…Studies of fish feeding ecology usually require sacrificing a great number of individuals (Petridis andO'Hara 1988, Barnett et al 2010). This can inflict severe effects on natural populations since it can reduce genetic diversity to deleterious levels (Kamler and Pope 2001), alter population structure (Light et al 1983), and even create a bad impression of fisheries science to the society as a whole (Hakala and Johnson 2004). The situation is even worse when dealing with a species or a population that is already threatened (Shuman and Peters 2007).…”

“…The flushing method, or gastric lavage, is the most simple and efficient method used to safely remove food items without sacrificing the fish (Hyslop, 1980;Hartleb & Moring, 1995;Hakala & Johnson, 2004), and has been used safely and efficiently in studies of food habits of various salmonids and sturgeon species (see Kamler & Pope, 2001;Brosse et al, 2002).…”

“…Gastric lavage is an effective and relatively nonlethal method of removing ingested prey items (Brosse et al 2002;Hakala and Johnson 2004;Barbour et al in review). Pulsed gastric lavage removes stomach contents by using pressurized water from a tube inserted past the esophagus, causing regurgitation of consumed food items (Light et al 1983;Hartleb and Moring, 1995;Fowler and Morris 2008).…”
