are two of the most widely spread plants on the market for annual potted ornamental plants. In order to identify the most adequate substrate formula we analyzed the effects of different potting growing media used for P. hybrida grandiflora 'Bravo' and N. alata 'Dinamo' on their photosynthetic capacity, leaf area, and flowering potential. Optimization of growing media formula for petunia and ornamental tobacco was performed by preparing four growing media mixing fallow soil (FS), Biolan peat (BP), acid peat (AP), leaf compost (C), and perlite (P) in different proportions. The physiological potential of petunia and ornamental tobacco was investigated by photosynthesis and respiration rate and chlorophyll pigments in leaves, while the vegetative and flowering phenological stages were evaluated by number of leaves per plant, leaf area, number of flowers per plant and leaf area/flowers ratio. These measurements were significantly influenced by the different potting growing media used in this study. In the flowering stage, the highest photosynthesis rates (8.612 µmol CO2 m -2 s -1 ) as well as leaf area (1.766 dm 2 ) of petunias were obtained on growing media with 60% biolan peat, 30% acid peat and 10% perlite (BP60-AP30-P10). Flowering responses to growing conditions vary greatly among plants and the biggest number of ornamental tobacco flowers (22 flowers plant -1 ) was registered as an effect of BP60-AP30-P10 media. Growing media with the BP60-AP30-P10 formula seem to be the most adequate growth substrate to develop profitable crops for petunias and ornamental tobacco with high decorative value.

R E S U M OEste trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de testar substratos obtidos a partir da combinação de um composto orgânico oriundo de resíduos do processo de fabricação de celulose, com um substrato base de controle. O estudo foi realizado no viveiro florestal da Universidade Federal de Lavras utilizando-se sementes do híbrido Eucalyptus "urograndis". Foram testados seis tratamentos com doses crescentes de composto orgânico. O experimento foi implantado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis tratamentos, cinco repetições e 30 mudas por parcela. A avaliação dos substratos foi mensurada através da análise do crescimento das plantas, ao longo do tempo e de sua qualidade, ao final do processo de produção. Quanto às análises de crescimento e à qualidade das mudas, os tratamentos que continham 60 e 80% de composto orgânico apresentaram as melhores respostas. Concluiu-se que a produção de mudas de Eucalyptus "urograndis" com os substratos testados mostrou-se tecnicamente viável de acordo com as características e os índices analisados.Compost of residues of pulp and paper in the production of eucalyptus seedlings A B S T R A C TThis work was performed aiming to test substrates obtained from the combination of an organic compound, derived from waste of manufacturing process of cellulose, with a base substrate for control. The study was conducted at the Forest Nursery of the Federal University of Lavras using seeds of the hybrid Eucalyptus "urograndis". Six treatments with increasing doses of organic compound were tested. The experiment was implemented in a completely randomized design, with six treatments, five replications and 30 seedlings per plot. The substrate evaluation was measured through the analysis of plant growth throughout the experiment and the seedlings qualities at the end of production process. As for the analysis of growth and quality of seedlings, the treatments with 60 and 80% of organic compound presented the bests response. It was concluded that the seedling production of Eucalyptus "urograndis" with the substrates analysed proved technically feasiable according to the analysed characteristics and indexes. Abstract:A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of composted pineapple residue return (CPRR) on soil bio-chemical properties and the growth performance of next-cropped pineapple plants. The results suggested that CPRR markedly decreased the soil bulk density and increased the contents of available P and K. CPRR significantly increased the abundance of bacteria and actinomycetes, and the activities of catalase, acid phosphatase and invertase in the soil were notably heightened. Growth characteristics, including the plant height, length of leaves and roots, leaf width, number of leaves and fresh weight of the aboveground and belowground parts were significantly increased by CPRR. The contents of chlorophyll, soluble sugars, and soluble protein, as well root vigor were also markedly increased. CPRR also increased the fruit transverse and longitudinal diameters, weight and yield of next-cropped pineapple.
