Antibodies against herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) were examined in Sera from 132 patients with essential hypertension and 54 normotensive healthy subjects of the same age and sex. Prevalences of HSV and CMV antibodies (titre 3 4 ) were equal in patients and controls. A HSV antibody tire 264 was found in 39.5% (17/53) of patients with WHO stage II1 hypertension, in 26.2 % (22/85) of patients with stage 1-11 hypertension, and in only 9.4% (5/54) of normotensive subjects @<0.0005). The HSV antibodies were mainly of type 1. No association between CMV antibodies and vascular complications could be demonstrated.

Rapid screening for bacteriuria with a laser nephelometer

Detection of significant bacteriuria with a laser nephelometer was evaluated in this study and compared with the results obtained by the quantitative loop method. We screened 1002 urine specimens and 220 (21.95%) were found to be positive at greater than or equal to 10(5) colony-forming units (CFU)/mL of urine by the standard method. Of the 220 positive specimens, 210 (95.4%) were detected in 6 h or less and 177 (80.4%) were detected within 3 h. The false-positive rate was 2.3% at 3 h and 19.7% at 6 h. These findings suggest that a 6-h procedure is necessary to detect 95% or more of significant bacteriuria. Laser nephelometer is versatile and can be used for rapid screening of bacteriuria.

The increasing demand for serum protein quantitation poses several problems for the laboratory, including the lack of availability of high-volume immunochemistry analyzers, t h e broad concentration range spanned by clinically important proteins, and the difficulty in assay design caused by the variable nature of antiserum. This paper details a profile for 12 commonly requested serum proteins that span a concentration range of three orders of magnitude. The system, which is based on the COBAS FARA centrifugal analyzer, has a capacity of 700 tests per workday while exhibiting performance characteristics that equal or exceed those of pre-existing techniques. Several features of the FARA and of the assay design that contribute to the high volume capacity are discussed.
