Evaluation and Speciation of Heavy Metals Contamination of Selected Artisanal Mining Sites in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria

Abstract: Artisanal (illegal) mining has been reported to have environmental and health effects on the surrounding communities due to heavy metals pollution. The determination of total heavy metal concentration does not reflect the toxicity and bioavailability of the metals. Toxicity and bioavailability of the metals can be achieved by determining the form in which the metal exist in the environment (speciation). This present work evaluated the heavy metals’ {cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Z… Show more

“…Cd occurred predominantly in the readily available (acid extractable) fraction in both the oilbearing communities and the background soil during both seasons. This agrees with the findings by Emurotu (2020) Nimyel and Chundusu (2021) in contaminated soils. Though, the proportions of Cd in the acid extractable fraction were higher in soils from the oil-bearing communities than at the background soil.…”

“…The results speciation of trace metals in Table 4 indicate that Cd occurred mostly in the acid extractable (Aex) fraction within the oil-bearing soils and Control. The result is consistent with that obtained by Nimyel and Chundusu (2021) in contaminated soils. However, a higher proportion of Cd existed in the Aex fraction in the oil-bearing soils than in the background soil.…”
