Evaluation and prediction of material fatigue characteristics under impact loads: review and prospects

Abstract: PurposeThe properties of materials under impact load are introduced in terms of metal, nonmetallic materials and composite materials. And the application of impact load research in biological fields is also mentioned. The current hot research topics and achievements in this field are summarized. In addition, some problems in theoretical modeling and testing of the mechanical properties of materials are discussed.Design/methodology/approachThe situation of materials under impact load is of great significance to… Show more

“…The existing fatigue life models based on the critical plane approach are reviewed and summarized (Liu et al, 2022b). A fatigue life model that can consider non-proportional additional damage effects is proposed to address their shortcomings.…”

“…This can be seen, for instance, in the recommended practice given by DNV GL (2014) and a paper based on risk-based inspection (RBI) by Keprate and Ratnayake (2015). The issue of only adopting macroscopic crack propagation to evaluate the current fatigue damage state, or the remaining fatigue life, is due to the commonly accepted fact that macroscopic crack propagation is short in comparison to the total fatigue life, within the high cycle fatigue (HCF), low stress domain (Correia et al, 2021), resulting in the need to initiate a costly inspection program once the expected fatigue life has been surpassed (Wu et al, 2020;Liu et al, 2022b). Thus, the motivation emerges for research into methodologies to assess the change in material characteristics throughout the fatigue life, so that it can be leveraged as a tool to evaluate fatigue damage before the presence of a macroscopic crack.…”
