Evaluation and management of fungal-infected carrot seeds

Abstract: Carrot (Daucus carota L.), which is one of the 10 most important vegetable crops worldwide, is an edible root vegetable desired for its taste as well as its medicinal uses. However, a fungus isolated from carrot seeds was observed to substantially decrease the germination rate. The isolate was identified as Alternaria alternata based on morphological and molecular characteristics as well as a phylogenetic tree. The maximum seed infection rate of selected carrot cultivars was approximately 60%, with the main in… Show more

“…Green issues and potential threats to human health arising from the long-term use of chemical fungicides require innovative plant protection solutions [11,12], also, due to infections of the seeds by Alternaria spp., the germination rate decreases [5]. Thus, screening for suitable biofungicides and optimising their applications is essential.…”

“…Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is one of the most important root crops, and it is famous for its rich β-carotene and plant fiber contents [1][2][3]. According to the statistics of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), China accounts for approximately 37% of the global carrot cultivation area and generates 48% of the global carrot yield, making it the largest carrot-producing country.…”

“…This association between seeds and pathogens is an important means for the pathogens to spread on a large scale and a way to guarantee their survival in nature [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Seedborne pathogens can limit the production of many crops and can result in severe economic losses to growers [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”
