We tested the hypothesis that unloading the left ventricle just prior to reperfusion provides infarct size reduction compared with left ventricular (LV) unloading postreperfusion and reperfusion alone. Twenty-four mongrel dogs were subjected to 2 hr of left anterior descending artery occlusion and 4 hr of reperfusion. A transvalvular (TV) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) was inserted just prior to reperfusion and maintained during the rest of the experiment (LV Assist Pre group). In the LV Assist Post group, the TV LVAD was inserted and activated just after reperfusion. A control group was subjected to reperfusion alone with a sham-TV LVAD. At baseline, the hemodynamic data were similar in the three groups. Myocardial infarct size expressed as percentage of area at risk was significantly reduced in the LV Assist Pre group compared to the control group (P = 0.011) and to the LV Assist Post group (P < 0.05). At 4 hr of reperfusion, transmural myocardial blood flow in the ischemic zone was slightly higher in the animals unloaded prior to reperfusion compared to controls and significantly higher than in the LV Assist Post group (P = 0.04). Postreperfusion end-diastolic wall thickness returned to baseline level in the TV LV Assist Pre group compared to both controls and TV LV Assist Post group. In these latter two groups, a significant increase in postreperfusion end-diastolic wall thickness and contraction band necrosis in the central ischemic zone correlated well with the degree of reperfusion injury. LV unloading prior to, but not after, reperfusion reduces the extent of myocardial necrosis in canine hearts subjected to 2 hr of left anterior descending artery occlusion and 4 hr of reperfusion compared to either reperfusion alone or LV unloading after reperfusion.

This research explores the design, implementation, and evaluation of a prototype augmented reality application that assists operators in performing procedural tasks in control room settings. Our prototype uses a tablet display to supplement an operator's natural view of existing control panel elements with sequences of interactive visual and attention guiding cues. An experiment, conducted using a nuclear power plant simulator, examined university students completing both standard and emergency operating procedures. The augmented reality condition was compared against two other conditionsa paper-based procedure condition using paper manuals and a computer-based procedure condition using digital procedures presented on a desktop display. The results demonstrated that the augmented reality based procedure system had benefits in terms of reduced mental workload in comparison to the other two conditions. Regarding task completion time, accuracy, and situation awareness, the augmented reality condition had no significant difference when compared against the computer-based procedure condition but performed better than the paper-based procedure condition. It was also found that the augmented reality condition resulted in fewer intra-team inquiry communication exchanges in comparison to both paper-based and computer-based conditions. The augmented reality condition, however, yielded poorer memory retention score when assessed against the other two conditions. These results improved the understanding of augmented reality assistance systems for control room operations. We also discussed the implications of this study and directions for future research.

Recently, with the progress of computer technology, the digitalization of human-system interface (HSI) in the main control room (MCR) of advanced nuclear power plants (NPPs) has become an important issue. A higher level of automation means that the computers execute the greater part of the task. The frequency, however, of automation-induced system failures, including human errors, prompts us to more closely investigate the influences of automation. The objective of this study is to measure the effects of adaptive automation on the primary task performance, operator situation awareness (SA), and workload in an advanced MCR of an advanced NPP to reduce the number of failures and improve human performance. This study selects automatic mode and semi-automatic mode to compose five different types of automation allocations. The experiment scenario is a reactor shutdown task. A personal computer transient analyzer (PCTran) is used to simulate the HSI of an MCR. Twelve participants are required to perform the experiment scenario on the automation allocation types. The dependent variables were the primary task performance; the subjective workload was measured using an NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) questionnaire; and three levels of SA were estimated by SA queries. Experimental results revealed that the automation allocations made up of higher ratio automatic modes led to superior primary task performance, lower operator workload, and lower frequency of human errors. In the high ratio automatic mode allocation, the operators have the lowest SA queries score. This study provides additional information for future digital HSI design in the MCRs of advanced NPPs.
