Evaluating Two Common Strategies for Research Participant Recruitment Into Autism Studies: Observational Study

Abstract: Background Ongoing research is necessary to better understand the causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the developmental outcomes for individuals diagnosed with ASD, and the efficacy of the interventions. However, it is often difficult to recruit sufficient numbers of participants for studies, and despite the prevalence of ASD (currently estimated to affect 1 in 54 children), little research has focused on how to efficiently recruit participants with ASD. Obje… Show more

“…The total number of participants who received hybrid interventions (in all included studies) was extremely low. Although the difficulty of recruiting participants with complex conditions, especially with ASD, is understandable and even supported by the literature (e.g., Ahmed et al, 2020 ; Lord et al, 2005 ; Vozenilek, 1999 ), further studies with larger samples and more robust designs are needed to provide strong evidence supporting the efficacy of hybrid interventions for adolescents with ASD.…”

“…The genetic landscape of ASD is heterogeneous and consists of various types of genetic abnormalities involving almost all genes (eg, SHANK3, SHANK2, CHD8, SEMA5A, DOCK4) with different levels of penetrance [6][7][8]. Thus, autism studies have been conducted with different types of genetic variants [9][10][11][12][13][14], including de novo or inherited copy number variants, multiple hits, rare variants, common variants, and genetic pathways associated with ASD.…”
