Evaluating the therapeutic effect of Diallyl disulfide compared to that of Alderonate on Glucocorticoids induced osteoporosis in rats: Biochemical and histomorphometric analysis

Abstract: Introduction: The prevalence of Glucocorticoids (GC) use made Glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis (GIO) an important form of secondary osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates (Alderonate) are considered as pharmacological agents in prevention and treatment of GIO. Garlic containing Diallyl disulfide (DAS) has received special attention for its beneficial effects as an antioxidant. The present study attempted to evaluate the Alendronate, DAS, and the combination of Alderonate and DAS effect on bone gene expression of RAN… Show more

“…Images were taken at magnification (400X) to measure the thickness of tunica media (TM) in H&E stained sections, the area percentage of elastic fibers in TM in the VVG stained aortic sections and the area percentage of smooth muscle fibers in TM of Trichrome stained sections. Measurements were expressed using NIH Image J (v1.49) software [5,30] . Additionally, aortic specimens were taken and cut into small pieces (1/2-1 mm3), fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde solution, and processed to get ultrathin sections for transmission electron microscope (TEM) examination.…”

“…BPs are divided into two types which differ in their mechanism of action: nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs) and non-nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (non-N-BPs) [ 4 ]. N-BPs possess the most potent antiresorptive impact as alendronate, zoledronic acid, ibandronate, and risedronate [ 5 ].…”
