Evaluating the reliability, validity and minimally important difference of the Taiwanese version of the diabetes quality of life (DQOL) measurement

Abstract: Background: Few diabetes HRQOL instruments are available in Chinese language. We tested psychometric properties of a Diabetes Quality of Life (DQOL) in Chinese language for diabetes patients in Taiwan and estimated its minimally important differences (MIDs).

“…A previous study reports that an improvement in HbA1c was associated with an excellent internal consistency and validity for Malaysian adult diabetic population. This is consistent with other previous studies which had validated the translated versions of DQOL questionnaire in Chinese, Turkish, Iranish and Spanish populations (17)(18)(20)(21)(22) The evaluation of the face validity of DQOL questionnaire had shown that most patients could understand this questionnaire easily. Attaining a satisfactory level of face validity is an important criterion of a valid questionnaire, because this will enable us to draw valid responses from the respondents.…”

“…From the findings of previous studies, a significant correlation exists between the total DQOL score and the number and severity of diabetic complications and the impact of different medical interventions for diabetes (17)(18). DQOL questionnaire has been translated and validated into various languages such as Spanish, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese and Iranian (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22).…”

“…The satisfaction subscale of the Chinese version of the Diabetes Quality of Life (DQoL) Scale (Huang et al, 2008) was used to assess how satisfied subjects were with their lives as it related to diabetes. The satisfaction subscale of the DQoL is a 15-item scale with a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied).…”

“…Some studies showed improved evidence on the validity of DQoL instrument by testing the association of DQoL instrument and diabetes complications [7]. Proven its stability and validity, DQoL instrument is widely used for diabetes research despite its limitations and is still relevant until now.…”
