Evaluating the Possibility of Integrating Augmented Reality and Internet of Things Technologies to Help Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract: People suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and their caregivers seek different approaches to cope with memory loss. Although the AD patients want to live independently, they often need help from the caregivers. In this situation, caregivers may attach notes on every single object or taking out contents of drawer to make them visible before leaving the patient alone at home. This study reports preliminary results on an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) realtime system, achieved through Internet of Things (IoT) … Show more

“…• Augmented Reality: The use of augmented reality (AR) has been gaining space in recent years by being applied in the various scenarios of IoT applications. The development of mobile applications encompasses different areas of knowledge, ranging from health [198], education [199], and industrial [139] applications. An in-depth study of how the dynamic characteristics of IoT devices can influence the performance of AR solutions, as well as the modeling process of IoT systems, can be affected by their use, is necessary.…”

“…The aim of our study is to suggest an IA system for elderly people with MCI, and improve their ability to complete everyday tasks on their own. In our previous study [15], we implemented a task prompting system based on AR messages without any adaptive decision-making engine to evaluate the user's general cognitive condition. To increase the system's intelligence for making a correct reminder, we take advantage of an AR-based serious game assessment tool.…”
