Abstract:The new IMERG and GSMaP-v6 satellite rainfall estimation (SRE) products from the Global Precipitation Monitoring (GPM) mission have been available since January 2015. With a finer grid box of 0.1 • , these products should provide more detailed information than their latest widely-adapted (relatively coarser spatial scale, 0.25 • ) counterpart. Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation version 6 (GSMaP-v6) assessment is done by comparing their rainfall estimations with 247 rainfall gauges from 2014 to 2016 in Bolivia. The comparisons were done on annual, monthly and daily temporal scales over the three main national watersheds (Amazon, La Plata and TDPS), for both wet and dry seasons to assess the seasonal variability and according to different slope classes to assess the topographic influence on SREs. To observe the potential enhancement in rainfall estimates brought by these two recently released products, the widely-used TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) product is also considered in the analysis. The performances of all the products increase during the wet season. Slightly less accurate than TMPA, IMERG can almost achieve its main objective, which is to ensure TMPA rainfall measurements, while enhancing the discretization of rainy and non-rainy days. It also provides the most accurate estimates among all products over the Altiplano arid region. GSMaP-v6 is the least accurate product over the region and tends to underestimate rainfall over the Amazon and La Plata regions. Over the Amazon and La Plata region, SRE potentiality is related to topographic features with the highest bias observed over high slope regions. Over the TDPS watershed, the high rainfall spatial variability with marked wet and arid regions is the main factor influencing SREs.

Assessment of satellite precipitation products' capability for monitoring drought is relatively new in tropical regions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the reliability of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) 3B43 product in estimating the standardized precipitation index (SPI) in the Kelantan River Basin, Malaysia from 1998 to 2014, by comparing it with data from 42 rain gauges. Overall, the TMPA-3B43 performed well in the monthly precipitation estimation, but performed moderately in the seasonal scale. Better performance was found in the northeast monsoon (wet season) than in the southwest monsoon (dry season). The product is more reliable in the northern and north-eastern regions (coastal zone) compared to the central, southern and south-eastern regions (mountainous area). For drought assessment, the correlations between the TMPA-3B43 and ground observations are moderate at various time-scales (one to twelve months), with better performance at shorter time-scales. The TMPA-3B43 shows similar temporal drought behavior by capturing most of the drought events at various time-scales, except for the 2008-2009 drought. These findings show that the TMPA-3B43 is not suitable to be used directly for SPI estimation in this basin. More bias correction and algorithm improvement work are needed to improve the accuracy of the TMPA-3B43 in drought monitoring.

Satellite rainfall products have different performances in different geographic regions under different physical and climatological conditions. In this study, the objective was to select the most reliable and accurate satellite rainfall products for specific, environmental conditions of Bali Island. The performances of four spatio-temporal satellite rainfall products, i.e., CMORPH 25 , CMORPH 8 , TRMM, and PERSIANN, were evaluated at the island, zonation (applying elevation and climatology as constraints), and pixel scales, using (i) descriptive statistics and (ii) categorical statistics, including bias decomposition. The results showed that all the satellite products had low accuracy because of spatial scale effect, daily resolution and the island complexity. That accuracy was relatively lower in (i) dry seasons and dry climatic zones than in wet seasons and wet climatic zones; (ii) pixels jointly covered by sea and mountainous land than in pixels covered by land or by sea only; and (iii) topographically diverse than uniform terrains. CMORPH 25 , CMORPH 8 , and TRMM underestimated and PERSIANN overestimated rainfall when comparing them to gauged rain. The CMORPH 25 had relatively the best performance and the PERSIANN had the worst performance in the Bali Island. The CMORPH 25 had the lowest statistical errors, the lowest miss, and the highest hit rainfall events; it also had the lowest miss rainfall bias and was relatively the most accurate in detecting, frequent in Bali, ≤ 20 mm day −1 rain events. Lastly, the CMORPH 25 coarse grid better represented rainfall events from coastal to inlands areas than other satellite products, including finer grid CMORPH 8 .
