Evaluating the Performance of Indian Banking Sector Using Dea During Post-Reform and Global Financial Crisis

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to examine the performance of Indian banking sector in terms of efficiency, returns to scale, and total factor productivity change. The technique of data envelopment analysis is applied due to its flexibility to incorporate multiple inputs and multiple outputs without any underlying assumption on the functional form. There is growing tendency of public sector banks operating under increasing returns to scale, implying that substantial gains could be obtained from altering scale via … Show more

“…Traditionally, the burden of social development has largely been shouldered by PSBs and they have been in the forefront of channelizing financial resources from remote areas as well as expanding the outreach of banking services in the remotest part of the country (Chaudhary & Sharma 2011). Both PSBs and private sector banks have played a crucial role in meeting the resources required for a rapidly growing Indian economy and have been the main source of credit for various sectors of the economy (Kumar et al 2016).…”

“…Scale efficiency is the proportional reduction if the firm achieves constant returns to scale (CRS). Operating with CRS is the ultimate objective of firms because it allows them to avoid waste and operating at the optimal scale (Kumar, Charles, & Mishra, 2016).…”

“…To select inputs and outputs, the current study employs the intermediation approach with a restricted choice of variables. For further details regarding the justification behind using the intermediation approach, the reader is referred to Charles and Kumar (2012), Mishra (2016). DEA is sensitive to variable selection, i.e., as the number of variables increases, the ability to discriminate among the DMUs decreases; or otherwise stated, the more variables added, the greater becomes the chance that some inefficient unit will dominate the added dimension and become efficient (Smith, 1997).…”
