Evaluating the occurrence and conservation status of Sri Lankan species of Anacardiaceae

Abstract: Sri Lanka is a tropical island with variety of climatic, geographical and weather combinations. These significant variations have resulted high biodiversity in the country. Sri Lanka together with the Western Ghats is one of the biodiversity hotspots. Presently, Sri Lanka harbors 3,154 species of Angiosperm families of which 894 are endemic. The family Anacardiaceae is one of the flora groups that did not attract attention of the researchers. However, 47.4% of this family, including 46.7% endemics was consider… Show more

“…Sampling included ten species of four genera representing all the genera with endemics in the country, which also corresponds to three tribes out of four found in Sri Lanka. Collected locations of each species are given in Ariyarathne et al (2017). All the species investigated were included in separate and in combined phylogenetic analyses.…”

“…All these species were investigated for the fi rst time at molecular and cytological level. Extensive fi eld investigations were carried out throughout the country and most of the species were found at the Kanneliya Man and Biosphere Reserve (Ariyarathne et al, 2017). Some species were declared as Critically Endangered Possibly Extinct [CR(PE)] due to the inability to locate in the wild (MOE, 2012).…”

“…The dendrogram obtained showed four cultivated varieties of M. indica and the endemic M. zeylanica, that are all regular fruit bearers, grouped together. Based on the 2012 National Red List of Sri Lanka (MOE, 2012), M. zeylanica is categorized in the National conservation status 'Least Concerned' and as 'Vulnerable' according to Global Conservation status (Ariyarathne et al, 2017).…”

“…Sri Lanka together with the Western Ghats in Southern India, is a one of the currently recognised, thirty five global hotspots for biological diversity (Ariyarathne et al, 2017). These 35 hotspots define regions where 43% of vertebrates (including 60% of threatened mammals and birds), and 80% of all threatened amphibians (Mittermeier et al, 2011;Williams et al, 2011) survive within habitat covering just 17.3% of the Earth's surface.…”
