Evaluating the low-carbon development of urban China

Abstract: Facing the ever-increasing serious pollution from carbon emission and the pressing need for sustainable development, China initiated the strategy of low-carbon development in 2010. Since then, eight cities and five provinces have been selected as pilot areas to develop a low-carbon economy. Under such a circumstance, this study aimed to construct a indicator system and evaluating model so that the low-carbon development levels of the pilot cities can be quantified. Therefore, this study, based the on Driving F… Show more

“…Statistical analysis indicated that this policy has had a significant effect on reducing carbon emissions in some pilot cities. For example, Hangzhou City, Xiamen City, and Shenzhen City have reduced carbon emissions by more than 200,000 tons per year [ 19 , 20 ]. And, compared with the provincial average level, the carbon emission intensity of Zunyi City, Urumqi City, and Wuhan City decreased by 20.43%, 19.44%, and 19.12%, respectively [ 21 ].…”

“…Entropy is a common objective weighting method. It reflects the importance of indicators by calculating the difference between the numerical values of the objective indicators [52]. Compared with the subjective weighting method, the weights obtained through entropy have higher reliability and accuracy [53].…”

“…According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the global warming has been increasing at an alarming pace in recent decades which is proved by scientific evidences [1]. According to the report released from IPCC, there is a 90% possibility that the increase in greenhouse gases emitted by the human's activities leads to global warming [2]. There has been a growing concern about global climate change especially resulting from energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.…”
