Evaluating the Impact of the Highway Infrastructure Construction and the Threshold Effect on Cultivated Land Use Efficiency: Evidence from Chinese Provincial Panel Data

Abstract: Highway infrastructure construction is regarded as one of the effective policy tools used to promote the flow of production factors and upgrade the industrial structure in China, and it may also be an important precondition to improving Cultivated Land Use Efficiency (CLUE). This paper uses a slack-based model (SBM) based on provincial-level panel data from China from 2004 to 2017 to measure CLUE. Then a dynamic spatial Durbin model and a panel threshold regression model were established to analyze the spatial… Show more

“…Many studies have covered the analysis of the issue of road infrastructure in the scope of sustainable development, including, among others, its effect on climate (Puodziukas et al, 2016;Bles et al, 2016), natural environment (Palander et al, 2020;Palander et al, 2021), spatial planning (Banister, 2012;Arts et al, 2021), land use (Hadi et al, 2021;Lu et al, 2022), and social participation in the decision-making process (Ogryzek et al, 2021;Song et al, 2021). The analyses have concerned the assessment of the effect of road investments on the real estate market (Haider & Miller, 2000;Mika, 2019).…”

“…In the vast developing countries with economic construction as the main task, cultivated land utilization efficiency mainly pursues the two-dimensional unification of resources and social economy. Previous studies have paid too much attention to the increase of cultivated land social and economic output generated by cultivated land input [24][25][26][27]. With the continuous increase of the population, the continuous depletion of resources, and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural films, and other agricultural chemicals, the ecological environment has deteriorated, and the ecological environmental benefits have gradually attracted widespread attention from scholars [28][29][30][31].…”
