Aim The present study tested the hypothesis that the composition of the odonate assemblages in environments with greater habitat integrity is significantly different from that of areas with reduced habitat integrity. Methods The samples were collected between April 2017 and November 2017 in eight streams in Caxias, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The habitat integrity index was used to quantify habitat integrity. The odonate specimens were collected by the fixed area scanning method. Results The habitat integrity index ranged from 0.265 to 0.915 at the different localities. A total of 229 specimens were collected, representing 19 odonate species. Species composition varied among streams that presented different degrees of conservation, with some species being typical of specific habitats. However, this variation had no effect on the number of taxa or the abundance of odonates, which may reflect the local substitution of extinct specialist species by generalists. Conclusions Evidence indicates that the reduction of habitat integrity is an important predictor of changes in the biodiversity of aquatic insects in streams such as those of the Cerrado-Caatinga ecotone.

Nos riachos tropicais a sazonalidade tem forte influência sobre a heterogeneidade, alterando os recursos disponíveis e ocasionando o carreamento de organismos, substrato e matéria orgânica. Provocando mudanças nas variáveis limnológicas, bem como na composição de espécies. O objetivo de nosso trabalho foi avaliar a congruência de resposta da comunidade de Odonata em duas estações sazonais em riachos da transição entre Cerrado e Caatinga. Foram amostrados 10 riachos afluentes do rio Itapecuru em Caxias, no leste do Maranhão nos meses de julho a dezembro de 2017 (menor precipitação) e em janeiro a junho de 2018 (maior precipitação). Um total de 386 espécimes foram coletados sendo 160 na estação de menor precipitação e 226 para a estação de maior precipitação. Não houve congruência de resposta para a ordem Odonata entre as estações, no entanto, para as subordens separadamente, Zygoptera apresentou alta congruência de imaturo, mas não houve para Anisoptera. Assim, em ambientes que enfrentam um forte estresse hídrico e devido as diferenças ecofisiológicas das subordens, a amostragem de apenas um período sazonal não fornece dados consistentes sobre a composição das espécies (Zygoptera apresentou semelhança na composição entre os dois períodos, mas não para Anisoptera), perdendo informações importantes sobre a diversidade local. Se o foco é a biodiversidade, o uso de subordinados pode estabelecer padrões de diversidade e adaptação entre as estações, tendo em vista as diferenças ecofisiológicas existentes.

The presence of environmental conditions that are suitable for the development of agricultural and cattle-raising activities has favored the expansion of land use in the Brazilian Amazon. This expansion changes the environmental conditions of aquatic ecosystems by altering the structure of the streambeds and the physicochemical conditions of the water. Therefore, this manuscript aimed to assess the effect of changes in environmental conditions along a gradient of different land uses on the richness and species composition of Gerromorpha (Heteroptera: Hemiptera) communities in streams from the Brazilian Amazon. We sampled Gerromorpha communities and environmental variables (physical structure of the habitat and physicochemical characteristics of the water) in 45 streams in the municipality of Paragominas in the state of Pará, Brazil. We then performed variation partitioning analyses to assess the relative contribution of habitat structure and water physicochemical variables on the richness and species composition. The Habitat Integrity Index (HII), which measures the habitat physical structure, was the best predictor of species richness. The HII and physicochemical variables were jointly the best predictors of species composition. Our results show that Gerromorpha communities respond to gradients of environmental anthropization in the Amazon region, which reinforces the importance of habitat integrity and water quality for the maintenance of Gerromorpha communities.
