Evaluating the Feasibility of Frequent Cognitive Assessment Using the Mezurio Smartphone App: Observational and Interview Study in Adults With Elevated Dementia Risk

Abstract: Background By enabling frequent, sensitive, and economic remote assessment, smartphones will facilitate the detection of early cognitive decline at scale. Previous studies have sustained participant engagement with remote cognitive assessment over a week; extending this to a period of 1 month clearly provides a greater opportunity for measurement. However, as study durations are increased, the need to understand how participant burden and scientific value might be optimally balanced also increases.… Show more

“…SGs for people with dementia have been developed as an assistive tool to promote physical, cognitive, and emotional stimulation, leading to a better quality of life [ 12 , 29 ]. Moreover, a novel SG can be used to assess cognitive decline at the early stages (or elevated risk) of dementia [ 30 - 32 ]. Investment in such computer apps can provide an opportunity to reduce institutional health care costs and enhance the quality of life of both family caregivers and people with dementia [ 33 ].…”

“…There is preliminary evidence that smartphone-based assessment of episodic memory [7], cognitive processing speed [8], and visual attention [9] are reliable tools to evaluate cognitive functions in preclinical populations and to monitor progression of cognitive decline in patients with CI.…”

“…The Mezurio smartphone application is a dementia-targeted collection of cognitive tasks (developed by a collaboration between the Oxford University Department of Psychiatry, Roche Pharmaceuticals and Eli-Lilly pharmaceuticals), released under an open-source, open-science approach. 8 9 Mezurio features a variety of cognitive tasks, including: (1) an episodic memory task, reliant on the regions of the medial temporal lobe. In this task participants are presented with photos of objects, which they are prompted to associate with one of three directions (left, right or up).…”
