Coastal erosion has become a pressing problem all over the world, especially in areas where the hinterland is only slightly elevated over the sea level. The ongoing progression reveals the urging need for engineered coastal protection measures like breakwaters. Amongst others, curtain wall breakwater types (CWB) have proven their potential to dissipate the wave energy in multiple studies. Their application is often considered in situations where only a partial protection of the coast is needed (e.g. to maintain a hydraulic connectivity or enable sediment transport for land reclamation). Due to their slender design, they are assumed to offer an economical alternative in comparison to massive breakwater constructions, while their pillar-based foundation shows advantages for applications under soft soil conditions. Within the development process of a detached breakwater to face coastal erosion in the Mekong Delta, different types of CWB configurations have been investigated under regular wave conditions. Several characteristics of CWB structures such as the inclination and thickness of the wall, the height of the structures, the rate of submergence and emergence were examined for different water depths and wave parameters. The wave-structure interaction was analyzed using FLOW3D software, which is capable of simulating wave transformation. It showed a high agreement in comparison with own experimental investigations and the wave theory. The results showed a continuous reduction of the wave transmission coefficient with increasing inclination from 90° to 135°, whilst the orientation of the inclination (e.g. 60° vs 120°) only showed a minor effect regarding the wave reduction. All CWB arrangements showed increasing performance with decreasing wave periods. Besides, the wave transmission was mainly impacted by the level of submergence together with the amount of supporting piers and the thickness of the structures. Water depth changes due to tidal influence revealed an increase in wave transmission coefficient once the wave started to overtop the structure.

Tóm tắt: Rừng ngập mặn ven biển Tây, Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long (ĐBSCL), đóng vai trò vô cùng quan trọng cho sự tồn tại và phát triển bền vững cả về kinh tế lẫn xã hội của cả ĐBSCL. Gần 350 km đường bờ biển của hai tỉnh Cà Mau và Hà Tiên được chen chắn bởi rừng ngập mặn, đây là một đặc trưng rất khác biệt so với các tỉnh khác của Việt Nam nói chung và ĐBSCL nói riêng. Rừng ngập mặn ven biển ở đây không chỉ cung cấp nơi cư trú cho hệ sinh thái ven biển, rễ cây ngập mặn còn cung cấp khả năng che phủ bảo vệ đường bờ khỏi tác động của sóng và dòng chảy, những nguyên nhân trực tiếp gây ra xói lở bờ biển. Tuy nhiên những năm gần đây, đường bờ biển Tây ĐBSCL chứng kiến sự đảo chiều trong diễn biến hành thái. Nhiều đoạn bờ bị sạt lở, những dải rừng bị suy thoái. Nguyên nhân có thể kể đến là do hoạt động khai thác của con người, biến đổi khí hậu và lún sụt đất. Bài báo này đã đi vào chi tiết phân tích nguyên nhân, từ đó đề xuất những giải pháp tương ứng để giúp khôi phục rừng ngập mặn, tiến đến gây bồi tạo bãi cho vùng bờ biển Tây, ĐBSCL.Từ khóa: Rừng ngập mặn, Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long, Giải pháp bảo vệ rừng.

Various types of vertical porous detached breakwaters are being built to reduce the impact of wave pressure on sea dikes as well as avoid rapid, severe erosion along the coastline of the lower Mekong Delta area. Waves can both pass through the porous breakwater and over the top of the structure (overtopping). The effectiveness of porous structures varies because it depends on the crest freeboard height, breakwater width, and porosity. However, the effectiveness of this type of porous detached breakwater has yet to be proven. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of this type of breakwater by introducing a numerical model based on the Navier -Stokes equations applied to the porous media. The numerical model is applied to simulate solitary waves interacting with the porous structures for various cases. The numerical results show that when the crest freeboard is low (low-crested porous breakwater), the breakwater width and the porosity of the breakwater do not significantly affect the wave height behind the breakwater. The wave reduction effect is greatly increased with the increase of the crest height due to submerged breakwater and overtopping waves. The breakwater schematization is tested to show the porous breakwater effectiveness in reducing wave energy.
