Evaluating the effectiveness of aquatic therapy on mobility, balance, and level of functional independence in stroke rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: To meta-analyze and systematically review the effectiveness of aquatic therapy in improving mobility, balance, and functional independence after stroke. Data Sources: Articles published in Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus up to 20 August 2019. “…No therapy strategy is effective for all patients, so it is not uncommon to combine different treatment modalities (medication, physiotherapy, massage, exercise, etc.). Despite the importance of mitigating pain for the development of a stroke rehabilitation program, previous published studies on aquatic therapy have not analyzed this outcome [42]. This pain not only limits the quality of life, but also the intensity of rehabilitation and its results.…”

“…Therefore, immersion in an aquatic setting provides multi-sensory stimulation, combining three sensory systems: the vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile, which may help improve balance and coordination [29,30]. Yet, there are few studies examining the effects of Aquatic Physical Intervention (API) on cognitive abilities [31][32][33][34] and functional behaviors [35,36].…”
