Evaluating structured assessment of anaesthesiologists' non‐technical skills

Abstract: The validity evidence collected on content, response process, and internal structure, suggests that ANTSdk is easy to use on video-recorded simulation scenarios, indicating that ANTSdk is a feasible instrument for NTS assessment during anaesthesia training.

“…Influenced by engineering design cycle frameworks (Endsley, ), SA has been defined “as an understanding of the state of the environment” and elements in a system in time and space (Endsley, ; p65). However, self‐awareness has been included as a component of situational awareness in frameworks for medical NTS (Jepsen et al., ). Self‐awareness as emotion cognition has not been foregrounded in this body of work; instead, awareness remains focused upon the situation (such as systems, external environment, gathering information and projecting future states) (Zhu et al., ).…”

“…These NTS are recognised as being key to underlying adverse events (Yule et al., ). It is suggested that up to 70% of adverse events are related to lapses in clinician NTS (Jepsen et al., ). Originating from the aviation industry and models of crew resource management (Jepsen et al., ), definitions and theories of NTS have given little, if any, attention to emotional cognition as a NTS.…”

“…As with other studies, most (10/19) involved two observers. [59][60][61][64][65][66][67][69][70][71] Fifteen studies involved observers with a clinical background, 9,46,50,59,61,62,[64][65][66][68][69][70][72][73][74] and five of the studies involved nonclinical observers. 50,60,67,70,71 Sixteen studies provided a description of the training completed by the observers.…”
