Evaluating Sheath Blight Resistance in Rice Using Detached Tiller and Field Screening Method

Abstract: In present study physical resistance test on 12 rice varieties against sheath blight (ShB) caused by Rhizoctonia solani was examined. A detached tiller test was used to measure components of ShB physiological resistance at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Tarahara, Nepal. The varieties were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications in year 2010-12. A sclerotium was inserted below the leaf collar of individual tillers maintained in tubes filled with water. Only the… Show more

“…We predicted, and confirmed that the US japonica lines CCDR, CL53, Cypress, Blue Bonnet, CL111 carry the Os WAK91 T allele associated with known susceptibility 4, 31, 32–38 . In contrast, the indica lines (IR29, IR64, Kasalath, Jasmin, TeQing, Nagina 22, Pokkali and Nonabokra) were confirmed to carry the resistant C allele (Figure-1G), and exhibit some level of known SB resistance phenotype 35, 3941 . One exception is 93-11, from which the indica reference genome was sequenced 42 , and which is known to be moderately susceptible 39, 43 .…”

“…In contrast, the indica lines IR29, IR64, Jasmin, TeQing, Pokkali, and Nonabokra, and AUS lines Kasalath and Nagina 22, were confirmed to carry the resistant C allele ( Figure 3 A). These indica and AUS lines exhibit some known SB resistance phenotypes [ 53 , 54 , 59 , 63 , 64 ]. One exception is the rice line 93-11 with the indica reference genome [ 65 ], which is known to be moderately susceptible [ 53 , 66 ].…”

“…Moreover, Praveen et al (2018) in their investigation, performed screening on 57 germplasms of rice through artificial inoculation under field conditions and found most of the germplasms were highly susceptible, except Orgoja, which was resistant and Gopal Ghosh that was moderately resistant. Despite screening thousands of rice germplasms, only a few rice cultivars offer resistance to ShB that have been reported, viz., Teqing (Pinson et al, 2005), Jasmine 85 (Liu et al, 2009), Tetep (Channamallikarjuna et al, 2010, Pecos (Sharma et al, 2009), Sabitri (Chaudhary, 2016).…”
