Evaluating Patients’ Understanding of Printed Warfarin Medication Information

Abstract: This study demonstrates gaps in patients' understanding of warfarin therapy. Relying solely on the information in the FDA medication guide is insufficient to guarantee adequate understanding. Utilizing the suggestions from patients' feedback on other ways to deliver information should help future patients with different learning abilities and styles.

“…Despite the positive association between HL and the level of knowledge that all studies reflected, it is important to note that whilst different components and skills that inform or determine HL were evaluated in some of the studies discarded [ 47 51 ] HL was not specifically measured, which can make it difficult to make comparisons and lead to confusion. Paradigmatically, one of those studies [ 51 ] used two specific HL questions and assessed the readability of materials. However, it is increasingly acknowledged that HL is a much broader concept than readability and encompasses other social and critical elements [ 52 ].…”

“…Education and materials provided to patients must be easy to understand and readily accessible. Relying on the FDA medication guide for warfarin often leads to unsatisfactory patient knowledge and outcomes [ 14 ]. Several approaches have been successful in leading to a better understanding of warfarin therapy such as one-on-one education [ 15 ], video education from a pharmacist [ 16 ], post-hospital discharge education [ 17 ], and nurse-led anticoagulation clinics [ 18 ].…”

“…Obtaining accurate, personally relevant information about these risks is challenging ( 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ). Although the US Food and Drug Administration requires that patients receive a medication guide with most DMARDs, research suggests that many patients have difficulty understanding the information that the guides contain ( 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ). This is likely due to both design issues (e.g., nonadherence to plain language guidelines) ( 14 ) and the prevalence of limited health literacy/numeracy skills among patients ( 15 ).…”
