Evaluating Non-Conventional Chitosan Sources for Controlled Release of Risperidone

Abstract: In this work, two chitosan samples from cuttlebone and squid pen are produced and characterized. We studied the formation of thermoresponsive hydrogels with β-glycerol phosphate and found proper formulations that form the hydrogels at 37 °C. Gel formation depended on the chitosan source being possible to produce the thermoresponsive hydrogels at chitosan concentration of 1% with cuttlebone chitosan but 1.5% was needed for squid pen. For the first time, these non-commercial chitosan sources have been used in co… Show more

“…Chitosan, a chitin-derived linear cationic polysaccharide, is a natural, hydrophilic, non-allergenic, biocompatible, non-toxic and biodegradable product obtained from chitin of cuttlebone [112,113]. Chemical modification of chitosan has been frequently carried out to prepare derivatives with applications in many fields including pharmaceutics [112,[114][115][116]. For example, a low-molecular weight sulfated chitosan holds immense potential in carbohydrate-based pharmaceuticals [117], and it is a potential inhibitor of white spot syndrome virus proteins [118].…”

“…XG is a porous, architectured material emanating from varying drying strategies of wet gels . Thus, the enchanting and peculiar attributes of these porous materials are garnered from the peculiar exibility as well as resilience of the sol-gel fabrication procedure, garnered in synergy with either ambient drying (X-G) or supercritically a liated drying (A-G) [81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100]. As already elucidated, these substrates have been fabricated from varying precursors, like carbon, silica, and biopolymeric entities and possessing differing biological, physical, chemical, and mechanical, attributes, relative to varying parameters, including precursoral substrates, solvent medium, as well as drying parameters [101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120].…”

“…Atypical antipsychotic medications have become the most commonly used drugs for treating schizophrenia [ 4 ]. Among these medications, risperidone is a widely utilized medication, primarily exerting its antipsychotic effects through the blocking of the dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, though it carries a higher incidence of extrapyramidal symptoms and hyperprolactinemia adverse reactions [ 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”
