Research finds that social media platforms’ peer-to-peer structures shape the public discourse and increase citizens’ likelihood of exposure to unregulated, false, and prejudicial content. Here, we test whether self-reported reliance on social media as a primary news source is linked to racialised policy support, taking the case of United States Muslims, a publicly visible but understudied group about whom significant false and prejudicial content is abundant on these platforms. Drawing on three original surveys and the Nationscape dataset, we find a strong and consistent association between reliance on social media and support for a range of anti-Muslim policies. Importantly, reliance on social media is linked to policy attitudes across the partisan divide and for individuals who reported holding positive or negative feelings towards Muslims. These findings highlight the need for further investigation into the political ramification of information presented on contemporary social media outlets, particularly information related to stigmatised groups.

Does American identity predict preferences for anti-democratic policies that aim to marginalize Muslim Americans? Absent significant priming of inclusive elements of American identity, we argue that individuals with stronger attachments to American identity will be less likely than their counterparts to reject a range of anti-Muslim policies that are antithetical to principles of religious liberty and equality. Across three surveys and multiple measures, American identity powerfully predicts preferences for curbing the civil liberties of Muslim citizens. Particularly striking is the finding that the effect of American identity spans the partisan divide; it consistently explains the endorsement of exclusionary policies among self-identified Democrats, who typically hold more progressive policy positions toward minority groups than Republicans. Overall, our study highlights the contradictory and exclusionary nature of American identity, which has important implications for minority groups constructed as outside the boundaries of Americanness.

Since Kimberlé Crenshaw conceived the theory and concept of intersectionality in 1989, intersectional research has flourished. However, despite there being a significant increase in the understanding of the lived-experience of people, there has not been enough progress toward eliminating discrimination and achieving equality for all. This paper begins by highlighting the current state of inclusion, then reviews existing research on the application of intersectionality in efforts to address discrimination. The literature review includes an overview of several existing models designed to assist the application of intersectionality in reducing discrimination, followed by the identification of need for a framework that is practical, operationalizable, and addresses the needs of all people and intersectionalities. In light of the identified gap, an analysis of existing research on the discrimination causes of 13 individual identities and 5 intersectional identities was undertaken, from which eight common themes emerged. In light of the findings, a proposed new framework, called The 8-Inclusion Needs of All People, is presented. The framework is then illustrated with recommendations for application in government and policy making, the law, advocacy work, and in organizations with the goal of providing a useful framework for expediting social justice and equitable outcomes for all people.
