In the last decade, a number of wireless and small-sized devices (e.g., PDAs, smartphones, sensors, laptops, etc.) with increasing computing capabilities have appeared in the market at very affordable costs. These devices have started to be embedded in modern cars in the form of on-board computers, GPS navigators, or even multimedia centers. Thus, the vehicles can carry useful information, acting as data sources for other vehicles. Recently, some works have addressed the problem of processing queries in such highly dynamic vehicular networks in order to share information between drivers. The proposed query processing techniques usually rely on a push model. Hence, each vehicle receives data from its neighbors and decides whether they are relevant enough to be stored in a local data cache. Then, the data may be used by a query processor to retrieve relevant data for the driver. In this paper, we look at the problem from a broader perspective and discuss the interest of multi-scale query processing techniques in such context. The goal of such techniques is to exploit, at the mobile device's level, different access modes (e.g., push, pull) and various data sources (e.g., data cached locally, data stored by vehicles nearby, remote Web services, etc.) to provide the users with results for their queries. We highlight the most important challenges and outline some possible approaches. We also present a prototype of a first query evaluator developed using the Microsoft LINQ API.

RESUMEL'évolution des terminaux nomades et des réseaux mobiles et/ou sans fil a favorisé la forte croissance du nombre d'usagers de ces terminaux depuis quelques années. Cependant, le marché tend à se stabiliser et aujourd'hui, l'enjeu est de consolider les relations avec les clients déjà existants en leur proposant de nouveaux services basés sur la mobilité et sur la localisation des utilisateurs. Nous nous intéressons particulièrement dans cet article aux applications basées sur la formation de sphères de communication construites par superposition de plusieurs réseaux mobiles et/ou sans fil, et qui permettent à plusieurs usagers de terminaux nomades, physiquement proches les uns des autres, de communiquer et d'échanger des informations. Dans cet environnement mobile et dynamique, les services de localisation actuels présentent de sévères limites. Nous avons donc proposé ISLANDS, un service de localisation qui fournit un modèle d'évaluation permettant de répondre aux requêtes dépendantes de la localisation telles que « quel est le cinéma le plus proche de moi ? ». Dans cet article, nous décrivons les solutions proposées pour permettre l'expression et l'évaluation de telles requêtes. Et nous nous intéressons particulièrement à l'évaluation de ces solutions. Given this increase, today's service providers have to propose new location-aware applications based on users mobility. We particularly focus on applications based on communication areas. These areas are formed by juxtaposition of several wireless and/or mobile networks and allow the users of handheld devices, physically close to each other, to communicate and exchange data. In this mobile and dynamic environment, the current localization services are not well suited, thus, we have proposed ISLANDS. The localization service ISLANDS provides an evaluation model which allows, in particular, the evaluation of location dependent queries such as "which is the closest theater to me ?". In this paper, we describe the proposed solutions to allow the expression and the evaluation of this type of queries. And, we detail more particularly the evaluation of these solutions.

Abstract. In recent years, mobile devices and applications achieved an increasing development. In database field, this development required methods to consider new query types like location-dependent queries (i.e. the query results depend on the query issuer location). Although several researches addressed problems related to location-dependent query processing, a few works considered timing requirements that may be associated with queries (i.e., the query results must be delivered to mobile clients on time). The main objective of this paper is to propose a solution for location-dependent query processing under soft real-time constraints. Hence, we propose methods to take into account client location-dependency and to maximize the percentage of queries respecting their deadlines. We validate our proposal by implementing a prototype based on Oracle DBMS. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed solution optimizes the percentage of queries meeting their deadlines and the communication cost.
