Evaluating behavioral process similarity of mechanical products in redesign for functional adaptability

Abstract: Functional adaptability makes a product not only multifunctional but also compact in structure and flexible in application. An adaptable-function mechanical product generally demonstrates various degrees of similarity in its behavioral processes for different adaptable functions. Evaluation of this similarity is an important aspect of research for the design of such products, especially for redesigning existing products towards functional adaptability. Until present there lacks research on the design and devel… Show more

“…Since the performance upgrading attributes are closely correlated with the product structure and its behavior, it is necessary to subdivide the product structure into a number of modules first. For example, a machine tool may be divided into control module, power module, transmission module, and execution module, 20 each of which may have its corresponding performance attributes waiting for upgrading. For the adaptable-function product, it is also necessary to distinguish between structural modules that are used for different functions, such as for the aforementioned example (the one with function F A and function F B ).…”
