Evaluating an individualized lifestyle and life skills intervention to prevent antipsychotic‐induced weight gain in first‐episode psychosis

Abstract: A lifestyle and life skills intervention delivered as part of standard care attenuated antipsychotic-induced weight gain in young people with FEP. The intervention was acceptable to the young people referred to the service. Such interventions may prevent the seeding of future disease risk and in the long-term help reduce the life expectancy gap for people living with serious mental illness.

“…Of particular interest was that first-episode status was, irrespective of age, associated with a better cardiorespiratory fitness indicating that disease-, treatment-, and/or unhealthy lifestyle-related factors contribute to a worsening of cardiorespiratory fitness. This observation points toward the need to adopt a prevention/early intervention approach to reduce worsening of cardiorespiratory fitness and consequent cardio-metabolic risk in people with SMI [58]. One factor accounting for lower cardiorespiratory fitness in outpatients could be that these outpatients often have reduced access to exercise facilities and social support.…”

“…Studies show that AE is an important factor in the treatment of depression [11], providing positive physiological and psychological changes involved in mood enhancement. AE contributes to autonomic balance and its effects can extend to improve mental health with reduction of symptoms [8,12], of weight gain induced by antipsychotics [13], and of cardiovascular risk [14], and increase in cardiorespiratory fitness (APCR) [15]. However different methods and intensities may provide different psychological responses to exercise, interfering with adherence [16].…”
