Evaluate pure Breeding and Crossbreeding Strategy for Better Carcass and non-carcass Traits of Awassi, Chios, and their Reciprocal Crossbred Lambs

Abstract: In Jordan, crossing local sheep with the exotic breed has an acceptable sound by farmers but needs scientific proof for planned-ahead crossing and introgression. This work aimed to find the best mating strategy on economic carcass and non-carcass traits of produced lambs under an intensive production system in Jordan. The mating strategy among Awassi and Chios for two years was designed to obtain different pure- and cross-bred lambs. They were pure Awassi, pure Chios, and reciprocal crosses of Awassi-Chios and… Show more

“…In agreement with studies on Chios or other fat-tailed sheep [ 46 , 47 ], statistically significant differences between male and female sheep were detected, regarding live weight, carcass yield, muscle fiber minimum Feret’s diameter, L* and hue angle. Interestingly, females presented higher live weight; this could be associated with the fact that carcasses of female sheep in the heavier LWC slightly outnumbered those of male sheep.…”

“…Body dimensions supply information about the reproductive traits of the ewes. Through the most important body dimensions are chest girth, shoulder and hip length and widths, body length and hip heights (Abdullah & Tabbaa, 2011). Ewe reproductive performance is famous to be influenced by body measurement (Corner-Thomas et al, 2015).…”
