Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a frequent, preventable, and treatable condition characterized by a persistent airflow limitation, which is commonly progressive and related to an abnormal inflammatory response of the airway and lungs to noxious particles and gases. Sleep disorders are common in COPD patients, mainly sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS), insomnia, and periodic leg movements. SAHS is characterized by recurrent episodes of airflow limitation during sleep, leading to oxyhemoglobin desaturations and sleep arousals that cause non-restful sleep and excessive daytime hypersomnolence, as well as neuropsychiatric, respiratory, and cardiovascular disorders.
