Eutrophication overcoming carbonate precipitation in a tropical hypersaline coastal lagoon acting as a CO2 sink (Araruama Lagoon, SE Brazil)

Abstract: technical assistance in stable isotopes measurements. Luiz C. Cotovicz Jr. thanks the Fundação Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (FUNCAP) for a visiting researcher grant (No.

“…These patterns may vary over time, depending on local oceanographic and biological processes, and different anthropogenic pressures (e.g. Padin et al, 2010;Cotovicz et al, 2019;Cotovicz et al, 2020b;Marotta et al, 2020;Cotovicz et al, 2021;Valerio et al, 2021;Carvalho et al, 2022).…”

“…In nearby Araruama Lagoon, which is hypersaline and eutrophic but much larger than Lagoa Vermelha, eutrophication changed the ecosystem metabolism from net heterotrophic, benthic-dominated, and limited by phosphorus in 1993-1995, to net autotrophic, planktonic-dominated in 2017 [Knoppers et al, 1996, Cotovicz et al, 2021. In Araruama Lagoon, increased photosynthesis in phytoplankton driven by eutrophication consumes most of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and modulates alkalinity, decreasing the saturation state and the amount of precipitated CaCO 3 [Cotovicz et al, 2021]. Similarly, increased photosynthesis in the water column due to eutrophication could interfere with CaCO 3 precipitation in Lagoa Vermelha, including the stromatolites.…”

“…Coastal lagoons are formed by water bodies connected to the ocean through inlets and their salinity, can thus range from fresh to hypersaline (Kjerfve, 1994). The nutrient enrichment in these coastal lagoons is high in autochthonous, allocthonous, or anthropic origin (Cotovicz Jr. et al ., 2021). Coastal lagoon environments provide ecosystem services such as recreation and hydrobiological resources, v.g ., fish and crustaceans to support populations living in surrounding areas (Guimarães et al ., 2022).…”
