Euterpe oleracea Extract (Açaí) Is a Promising Novel Pharmacological Therapeutic Treatment for Experimental Endometriosis

Abstract: This study investigated the therapeutic potential of Euterpe oleracea extract (açaí) on the growth and survival of endometriotic lesions using an experimental model. Twenty female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into two groups after the implantation and establishment of autologous endometrium onto the peritoneum abdominal wall and treated with 200 mg/kg hydroalcoholic solution extract from açaí stone or vehicle via gastric tube for 30 consecutive days. Body weight, lesion surface areas, histological and i… Show more

“…Also, PGE2 has been reported to induce VEGF expressions thereby contributing to angiogenesis in endometriosis [ 11 60 61 ]. The results observed were in line with earlier reports [ 34 54 62 ] suggesting the significance of the microenvironment of inflammatory mediators and angiogenic factors in progression of endometriosis. Inhibition of inflammatory responses via down-regulating NF-κB signalling and angiogenesis are critical in therapy of endometriosis.…”

“…The plant specimen was deposited in the same herbarium with the voucher specimen MG 205222 number. The hydroalcoholic solution extracted from açaí stones was prepared as previously described [ 22 , 24 , 27 , 28 ]. In summary, 200 g of açaí stone were boiled in 400 mL of distilled water for 10 min and mixed for 2 min.…”

“…Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Arecaceae), commonly known as “açaí”, is a palm fruit native from the Amazon region of Brazil [ 19 ] whose antioxidant, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities have been previously reported as “natural” therapeutic options in the treatment of several pathologic conditions [ 20 - 28 ]. In fact, recent data from Silva and colleagues showed that açaí extract exerts an antitumorigenic effect in breast cancer malignant cells by inducing an increase in the autophagy process, in addition to decreasing the cellular viability of MCF-7 cells [ 26 ].…”

“…Angiogenesis process-In endometriosis, the central role in pathophysiological mechanisms is attributed to macrophages. These cells increase the intranuclear expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cyclooxigenase 2 (COX-2) genes, leading to increased angiogenesis and an inflammatory environment[58].…”
