The Jackson and Hunt (JH) theory has been modified to relax the assumption of isothermal solid/ liquid interface used in their treatment. Based on the predictions of this modified theory, the traditional definitions of regular and irregular eutectics are revised. For regular eutectics, the new model identifies a range of spacing within the limits defined by the minimum undercooling of the ␣ and ␤ phases. For the irregular Al-Si eutectic system, two different spacing selection mechanisms were identified:(1) for a particular growth rate, a nearly isothermal interface can be achieved at a unique minimum spacing I ; (2) the average spacing ( av Ͼ I ) is essentially dictated by the undercooling of the faceted phase. Based on the modified theoretical model, a semiempirical expression has been developed to account for the influence of the temperature gradient, which is dominant in the irregular Al-Si system. The behavior of the Fe-Fe 3 C eutectic is also discussed. The theoretical calculations have been found to be in good agreement with the published experimental measurements.

Pb 100Àx -Sn x solders (x = 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 35 wt.%, 50 wt.%, 60 wt.%, 61.9 wt.%, and 95 wt.%) were directionally solidified upward over a wide range of cooling rates _ T (0.016 K s À1 to 4.0 K s À1 ) by using a Bridgman-type directional solidification furnace. Microstructure parameters (primary dendrite arm spacing, k 1 , and eutectic spacing, k E ) and mechanical properties (microhardness, HV, and ultimate tensile strength, r) of the Pb 100Àx -Sn x alloys were measured. The dependences of the microhardness and ultimate tensile strength on the cooling rate, microstructure parameters, and composition were determined. According to experimental results, the microhardness and ultimate tensile strength of the solidified samples increase with increasing cooling rate and Sn content, but decrease with increasing microstructure parameters.

Bi-43 wt.% Sn eutectic samples were directionally solidified upward with five different growth rates (V = 8.3-164.8 µm/s) at a constant temperature gradient (G = 3.55 K/mm) in a Bridgman type directional solidification furnace. The lamellar spacings (λ) and microhardness values (HV) were measured from the quenched samples; the directionally solidified Bi-43 wt.% Sn eutectic alloy and the minimum undercoolings (∆T) were determined from the Jackson-Hunt eutectic theory. The dependency of lamellar spacings (λ), microhardness (HV) and undercooling (∆T) on the growth rate (V) were analyzed. According to these results, it has been found that the value of λ decreases with the increasing value of V and that the values of HV and ∆T increase for a constant G. The values of λ 2 V, λ∆T and ∆T V -0.5 were determined by using the values of λ, ∆T and V. The results obtained in the present work have been compared with those predicted by the Jackson-Hunt eutectic theory and with similar experimental results.
