Eustachian Tube Mature Teratoma

Abstract: Mature teratoma is a rare germ cell tumor containing all 3 basic germ cell layers and commonly found in the sacrococcygeal region. The eustachian tube is an unusual site for this tumor. To our knowledge, only 4 cases of mature teratoma originating in the eustachian tube have been reported in English-language literature. 1,2 We report a unique case of eustachian mature teratoma in a female infant presenting with a "double-tongue" problem.

“…13 It is also notable that not all published teratomas were located strictly inside the Eustachian tube but bulged into the nasopharynx through a long pedicle. 8,10,14 Our case showed no extension of the tumor toward the airways, explaining the absence of respiratory symptoms in our child.…”

“…Until 2013, only 16 cases had been reported in the literature, originating here. 2,[8][9][10] It is a tumorlike malformation containing cells from all the 3 germ layers (endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm). Different names had been assigned to these teratomas, according to the various proportions and nature of its cells: mature teratoma, malignant teratoma, epignathus.…”

“…These masses can extend upward in the direction of the middle ear or downward to the nasopharynx and oropharynx. 4 Our case is unique, because the middle ear had opened during the surgery. After that, the middle ear of this newborn could be directly visualized.…”

“…Middle ear includes tympanum, tympanic antrum, mastoid and ET, therefore the teratoma derived from the ET and extended down to the nasopharynx in one patient was included [ 9 ]. In this study, 19 females: 3 males, approximating the generally accepted sex ratio of 6 females:1 male for teratomas.…”
