EUS-FNA for Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Tertiary Cancer Center Experience

Abstract: EUS-FNA is a reliable modality for further characterization of suspected lesions and for establishing a tissue diagnosis. The occurrence of complications of EUS-FNA in this setting is low. Non-functional PNET are more frequently encountered than functional PNET.

“…We saw similar results in our series, with 23 out of 25 cases being found to be nonfunctional Pan NETs. Atiq et al [2] have reported that tumor size is directly related to the stage of disease, with tumors >2 cm in size being associated with advanced stage and metastasis. In our study, 5 patients presented with advanced-stage disease.…”

“…Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (Pan NETs) are rare, accounting for 1-2% of all pancreatic neoplasms [1,2]. Pan NETs, which were formerly known as islet cell tumors, are thought to arise from totipotential stem cells and neuroendocrine cells [3].…”

“…EUS can be combined with FNA to obtain cytology for NET confirmation and is safe. An earlier study in patients with pNETs, complications due to EUS+ FNA occurred in 1% (44). Moreover, in a pooled analysis of data from 19 EUS centers in the United States, the incidence of pancreatitis after EUS+ FNA of solid pancreatic lesions masses was 0.3% (45).…”

“…Not only do EUS techniques benefit from a good sensitivity and high specificity, respectively, 82 and 92 %, but they also allow for tissue biopsy and offer the possibility of lesion tattooing [38,39]. The latter has been shown to be an invaluable advantage especially in the presence of small pNETS when a laparoscopic approach is planned [40].…”
