Europium doped BaMgF4, an EPR and optical investigation

Abstract: 21Eu was introduced into pure and oxygen codoped BaMgF single crystals. A detailed EPR study of this ion (S57 / 2) was realized on 4 both types of systems. The result is that only one spectrum was observed involving a strong crystal field. The associated site symmetry of the impurity is C . It occupies very closely a Barium lattice site as was established by correlating the EPR results with those of a refined Eu EPR spectrum (the only one). Optical emission and excitation experiments were performed between 13 … Show more

“…The origin of the optical losses in the UV/VUV has not been cleared yet, but a correlation with the concentration of scattering centers in the VIS has been observed [7]. BaMgF 4 has been studied as a host crystal doped with transition metal and rare earth for ASSL applications [8,9]. Further, thin lms of BaMgF 4 have been investigated for memory applications, namely metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor eld-eect transistors [10,11].…”

“…x crystals, nominally x = 0.002, were used for the optical experiments. Continuous wave (CW) optical measurements were carried out with two home-built spectrophotometers already described elsewhere [13,14]. Time resolved measurements were performed with the aid of two different set-ups.…”

“…Solid-state 19 F NMR was used to provide a reference for quantum mechanical calculation of the chemical shifts in fluorides [30], whereas EPR studies have been focused on characterisation of properties and the coordination sphere of paramagnetic ions in the lattice [31,32]. Only one study uses paramagnetic Mn 2+ as a probe doped in a BaMgF 4 matrix [33].…”
