International mobility has radically changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among all types of families, transnational families might have particularly suffered in 2020 during lockdowns that restricted international visits to family members. This paper focuses on the life satisfaction of skilled migrants living in Switzerland before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, we focus on those who live longdistance transnational relationships with other family members. We investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on self-reported life satisfaction using the Swiss Migration-Mobility Survey (MMS). We apply panel analyses using random effects over three waves of the MMS. We found that the COVID-19 crisis negatively affected recently arrived migrants' well-being in Switzerland in 2020. However, migrants in transnational arrangements with children abroad show higher levels of life satisfaction in 2020, in comparison with migrant non-transnational families. When interacted with gender, this improvement of life satisfaction concerns mostly men, while women in transnational partnerships report a significantly lower level of life satisfaction in 2020.

Over recent years, there has been increasing attention to migration in social policy research. Uniting this research has been a focus on cross-national migration, and predominantly immigration. In the meantime, the relationship between human mobility and social policy at other scales and sites has gained much less attention. This is in spite of the salience of multiple forms of mobility and measures for restricting, facilitating or promoting mobility not confined to the territorial borders of the nation-state. This article proposes an alternative mobility perspective for social policy research that moves us beyond the limitations of current migration approaches. To do so, we draw on interdisciplinary mobilities theory and research. Empirically, we apply a mobility perspective to examine how systems of social provision are shaped by and shape mobility and immobility, in restricting, facilitating or promoting the movement of people. We argue that such an approach allows us to frame and address questions that place mobility and immobility as central to the social relations of welfare, advancing our understanding of how social policies can reduce or reinforce the inequalities of mobility.

Through a fine-textured ethnography that follows the journeys of migrants across various European countries in their interaction with the law, bureaucratic and police apparatuses, and rampant anti-immigration rhetoric, the book constructs a complex portrait of multi-sited and asymmetrical border struggles, in which young migrants are confronted with a system designed to exclude them and grind down their resistance. While central, migrant agency in Wyss' book is not romanticised. Instead, Wyss captures the encounter between migrants' agency and the working of migration regimes and how, faced with migrants' attempts to legalise their position, create better opportunities for themselves, and simply avoid immigration control and detection, states react by installing new measures attempting to turn migrants' endurance into exhaustion. These measures, Wyss argues, may not succeed in their goal of controlling human movement and combatting irregular migration, but they certainly contribute to reproducing and reinforcing racialised and classed structures of oppression, exploitation and inequality.We are delighted to add Navigating the European Migration Regime to our series.
