European Ground Motion Service (EGMS)

Abstract: Interferometric processing of a time series of acquisitions from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites makes it possible to detect and measure ground motion phenomena, typically caused by landslides, subsidence, earthquakes or volcanic activity, with millimeter-scale precision. This enables, for example, monitoring of the stability of slopes, mining areas, buildings and infrastructures. This work presents the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS), funded by the European Commission as an essential element o… Show more

“…This was done with the assumption that the horizontal movement is negligible. The map of the European Ground Motion Service (Costantini et al., 2021) gives some indication of horizontal movement in the area, but all the points with East‐West movement appear to be in the vicinity of founded structures. Manually checked points on top of sportfields do not show significant East‐West movement.…”

“…Some typical examples are the parallel small baseline subset (P-SBAS) processing chain [52][53][54], LiCSBAS [55][56][57], a tool for multitemporal SAR interferometry with big volumes of Sentinel-1 data and SNAPPING [58], a surface displacements mapping tool using Sentinel-1 data that operates on the GEP platform. Finally, the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) [59,60] provides a unique product of InSAR ground displacements in Europe with Sentinel-1 data.…”

“…The rates we have derived can be used to train machine learning algorithms to identify natural subsidence in large InSAR datasets. For example, the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS [26]) con-tains over 6 million measurement points for the UK alone, manual analysis of so many points and their time series is not possible, therefore having training datasets which characterise the motion characteristics for subsidence phenomena is essential to better use these new data.…”
