Purpose: Sudden unexplained infant death (SUID) is a major contributor to infant mortality, and pediatric nurses have the responsibility to educate parents on SUID-reducing strategies. This study was conducted to measure pediatric nurses' knowledge of SUID-related safe sleep practices (K-SSSP) and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (K-ICPR).Methods: In total, 136 pediatric nurses were administered a survey including K-SSSP (13 items), K-ICPR (5 items), confidence in K-SSSP education (1 item; 5 points), and other factors relating to SUID experiences or education.Results: The correct answer rates of the K-SSSP and K-ICPR were 62.6% and 62.5%, retrospectively. The mean score for confidence in K-SSSP education was 2.6±0.9. Only 18 nurses (13.2%) responded that they educated parents on the content of the K-SSSP, while 76 nurses had received education on SUID. Positive relationships were observed between K-SSSP scores and higher education, between K-ICPR scores and having own child(ren) and clinical experience, and between confidence in K-SSSP education and higher education or having one's own child(ren). Nurses caring for newborns performed more SUID education than nurses working in other units.Conclusion: There is a profound need to implement a systemic educational program on SUID and strategies to reduce SUID for pediatric nurses.

Background: In-hospital cardiac arrest is a major cause of death in European countries, and survival of patients remains low ranging from 20% to 25%. Aims: The purpose of this study was to assess healthcare professionals’ knowledge on cardiopulmonary resuscitation among university hospitals in 12 European countries and correlate it with the return of spontaneous circulation rates of their patients after in-hospital cardiac arrest. Methods and results: A total of 570 healthcare professionals from cardiology, anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine departments of European university hospitals in Italy, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Finland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Greece completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions based on epidemiology data and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and 26 multiple choice questions on cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge. Hospitals in Switzerland scored highest on basic life support ( P=0.005) while Belgium hospitals scored highest on advanced life support ( P<0.001) and total score in cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge ( P=0.01). The Swiss hospitals scored highest in cardiopulmonary resuscitation training ( P<0.001). Correlation between cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge and return of spontaneous circulation rates of patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest demonstrated that each additional correct answer on the advanced life support score results in a further increase in return of spontaneous circulation rates (odds ratio 3.94; 95% confidence interval 2.78 to 5.57; P<0.001). Conclusion: Differences in knowledge about resuscitation and course attendance were found between university hospitals in 12 European countries. Education in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is considered to be vital for patients’ return of spontaneous circulation rates after in-hospital cardiac arrest. A higher level of knowledge in advanced life support results in higher return of spontaneous circulation rates.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo consiste em analisar o desempenho do enfermeiro na assistência ao paciente em parada cardiorrespiratória. Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, constituída por artigos coletados nas bases de dados Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde e PubMed, em português, inglês e espanhol. Foram encontrados 269 artigos, dos quais 8 foram elegíveis. Observou-se que em 2018 houve aumento da produção de estudos sobre esta temática. As conclusões dos estudos levam a inferir que o sucesso do atendimento a pacientes em parada cardiorrespiratória e a chance de recuperação estão diretamente relacionados com a rapidez da atuação da equipe e da aplicação imediata, competente e segura das medidas de reanimação. Os estudos demonstraram que o profissional enfermeiro possui aptidão nas tomadas de decisões, na identificação e a realização dos procedimentos necessários para aumentar a sobrevida do paciente. Contudo, ainda existe alguma carência de conhecimento que interfere no desempenho do enfermeiro. Palavras-chave: Parada cardíaca; Assistência à saúde; Cuidados de enfermagem.Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the performance of nurses in patient care in cardiorespiratory arrest. This is a systematic literature review, consisting of articles collected from the Virtual Health Library and PubMed databases, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. We found 269 articles, of which 8 were eligible. It was observed that in 2018 there was an increase in the production of studies on this theme. The conclusions of the studies lead to the conclusion that the success of cardiorespiratory arrest patient care and the chance of recovery are directly related to the rapidity of the team's performance and the immediate, competent and safe application of resuscitation measures. Studies have shown that nurse practitioners have the ability to make decisions, identify and perform procedures necessary to increase patient survival. However, there is still a lack of knowledge that interfere with the nurse's performance.
