European bi-national marriages in Portugal and EU social integration

Abstract: Some scholars have hypothesized that social integration in the European Union (EU) is a trigger for bi-national European marriages. Although this idea has been the motivation behind some research, empirical evidence shows that the effect of accession to the EU has had a limited effect on partner choice. “…In Portugal, various studies (many of them supported by these theories) have focused on binational marriage 1 between a Portuguese citizen and an immigrant, endeavouring to investigate their evolution and identify patterns and tendencies of these marriages (e.g., Evangelista, 2014;Ferreira & Ramos, 2008Gaspar, 2008;Gaspar et al, 2017Gaspar et al, , 2018Ramos et al, 2015;Raposo & Togni, 2009). Some of these studies provide a more detailed insight into Luso-Brazilian couples (Evangelista, 2014;Ferreira & Ramos, 2008Ramos et al, 2015;Raposo & Togni; enabling not only the identification of their key features but also revealing that among heterosexual couples the characteristics of these marriages are slightly different from marriages where both partners are Portuguese.…”
