Eupterote elisavetae sp. nov. from Flores Island, Indonesia (Lepidoptera: Eupterotidae)

Abstract: Here, we report on the first record of the genus Eupterote Hübner, [1820] (Lepidoptera: Eupterotidae) from Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This moth represents the new species Eupterote elisavetae sp. nov. that is described here. Previously, two endemic eupterotid species, i.e. Ganisa floresiaca Nässig, 2009 and Pseudojana floresina Nässig & Bouyer, 2010, were known to occur on the Flores Island.

“…Similar biogeographic patterns with the high prevalence of Oriental taxa and low proportion of Australian species were recovered in other insect groups on the Lesser Sunda Archipelago, e.g. Lepidoptera (Zolotukhin & Witt 2005;Spitsyn et al 2016Spitsyn et al , 2019Bolotov et al 2017Bolotov et al , 2018bBolotov et al , 2019, 2020aSpitsyn & Potapov 2020), and Coleoptera (Mohamedsaid 2009).…”

“…The type series of the new species and samples of Amerila astreus were studied in the Lepidoptera collection of the Russian Museum of Biodiversity Hotspots [RMBH], N. Laverov Federal Center for Integrated Arctic Research of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Arkhangelsk, Russia. The specimens and genitalia processing and photographing followed those described in our earlier works Spitsyn & Bolotov 2020;Spitsyn & Potapov 2020). Diagnosis.…”

“…This insular group harbors a largely endemic Lepidoptera fauna (e.g. Yakovlev 2015;Bolotov et al 2017;Spitsyn & Potapov 2020), revealing up to 90% of local endemic species in several families (Zolotuhin & Witt 2005;Zolotuhin 2009;Spitsyn & Bolotov 2020). In general, the fauna of tiger and lichen moths (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae) of the Lesser Sundas is still insufficiently known, while the insular endemism in this remote archipelago reaches relatively high levels, e.g.…”
