EUPATI Guidance for Patient Involvement in Medicines Research and Development (R&D); Guidance for Pharmaceutical Industry-Led Medicines R&D

Abstract: The importance and merits of greater patient involvement in medicines research and development (R&D) are commonly acknowledged and are thought to offer benefits for all involved parties. It helps to improve discovery, development, and evaluation of new effective medicines, based on the collaborative identification and understanding of unmet needs, research priorities, optimization of clinical study design, outcome measures, and endpoint development. It can result in increased transparency, trust and mutual res… Show more

“…In accordance, Kim et al (2013) showed that meat from Duroc had the highest qualities, with lower drip loss, cooking loss, and shear force, and higher pH, tenderness, juiciness, and flavor than meat from LYD muscles. Moreover, higher pH was previously associated with color, drip loss (higher water holding and water binding capacity), and firmness (Warner, 1994). Additionally, muscles with lower drip loss reportedly have reduced lactate production and glycolytic substrates, leading to rapid ATP depletion (Maltin et al , 2003; Nitipongsuwan and Mekchay, 2015).…”

“…The main opportunities for patient involvement in medicines development highlighted by interviewees in this study were for directing early development (e.g., identifying unmet medical need and informing decisions on which treatments to develop) and during clinical development (e.g., selecting clinical trial endpoint selection and informing protocol design; Figure 1 ). These opportunities have been described in literature ( 5 , 17 , 18 ) and were also identified in a qualitative interview study conducted by Lowe et al ( 1 ) aiming to gain a better understanding of the present state of patient involvement in development. Smith et al ( 19 ) used surveys to explore attitudes toward engaging patient organizations and found similar results; survey respondents valued the importance of involving patient groups in clinical research and patient group respondents valued their contributions to research protocol development.…”

“…Hitherto, all stakeholders can plea with the governing authorities and regulatory bodies for an unambiguous position on how to increase patient involvement. EUPATI has guidelines that can be employed for this stance (e.g., the EUPATI Guidelines) (4,12,13). By collaborating strategically, EUPATI.be can establish a platform where patients and decision-makers can interact in a more structured and ethical way.…”
