Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb induces apoptosis via mitochondrial pathway as prooxidant in human uterine leiomyomal smooth muscle cells

Abstract: Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb (EA) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine, commonly used to treat tumors in Korea and China for centuries. Our earlier studies have indicated that EA exhibits antitumor properties, but its mechanism remains to be elucidated. In this study, we evaluated the molecular mechanism of EA in a human uterine leiomyomal smooth muscle cell (ULSMC) line. Water extracts of EA have been reported to not only function as antioxidants but also cause cytotoxic effect. We investigated the mechan… Show more

“…SB contains high levels of both alkaloids and flavone compounds (47). EA is a traditional Korean medicine that has be used as an anti-tumor agent in both Korea and China (48). EA is known to contain a variety of flavonoids, cardenolides, caffeic acid (48) and recently quercetin and rutin were extracted from this plant (49).…”

“…Similarly, anti-cancer activities of S. barbata, E. alatus, and isoliquiritigenin, the latter a component of S. suberectus, have been determined by induction of cell apoptosis via caspase-3 activation in uterine leiomyomal smooth muscle cells (Lee et al, 2005;Kim et al, 2006Kim et al, , 2008aKim et al, , 2008b. C. zedoaria has also been reported as beneficial in the treatment of uterine cervical neoplasia (Moura et al, 2002).…”

“…Euonymus alatus , known as ' gui-jun woo ' in Korea, has been used in Asian folk medicine to treat tumors, regulate blood circulation, and relieve pain in countries including Korea and China (Kim et al, 2006; Park et al, 2005). However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support the medical use of E. alatus .…”
