Eulerian–Lagrangian Simulation of Biomass Gasification Behavior in a High-Temperature Entrained-Flow Reactor

Abstract: In this paper, a multi-scale Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD model based on OpenFOAM has been constructed, which takes into account heat and mass transfer, pyrolysis, homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, radiation, as well as the interactions between the continuous gas phase and discrete particles. The proposed model is validated and applied to a lab-scale biomass entrained flow reactor. The operating temperatures are high (1000-1400 °C) and influences of five operating parameters (reactor temperature, steam/carbo… Show more

“…A gridsensitivity study of this setup has been carried out and reported in our previous paper. 12 The fuel used in the simulations is beech wood. Its properties are configured identically to the fuel used in the experiments at DTU, and its characteristics are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…In parallel, gasification models using equilibrium model [12] or CFD calculations [14] have been developed and tested. These models, which include simple reaction schemes, generally allow predicting the syngas composition with a good accuracy for the main gases (CO, H 2 , CO 2 , CH 4 , H 2 O) but are unable to predict tar and soot production.…”

“…However, CFD simulations may be best used to predict the trends in the process of gasification rather than to calculate the specific values of the parameters . Ku et al performed a parametric analysis and evaluated the produced species concentration and carbon conversion using CFD simulation. They found that increasing the gasifier temperature has a positive effect on the gasifier performance while increasing the excess air ratio reduces the amount of generated syngas.…”
