Eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids from the liverwort Lepidozia fauriana

Abstract: Three new (8, 12, 13) and two revised (7, 9) eudesmane alcohols have been identified from the Taiwanese liverwort Lepidoziafauriana, together with a known macrocyclic bisbibenzyl, isoplagiochin D, and other known sesquiterpenoids. Their structures were determined by NMR and X-ray analyses. Three chemo-types of Lepidoziafauriana may be classified according to the skeleton of the major sesquiterpenoids identified in the species.

“…From this essential oil amorpha-4,9-dien-14-al (13) and 7,14anhydroamorpha-4,9-diene were isolated, among others [41]. These data are in accordance with the other reports concerning chemistry of this liverwort species [42,43]. Shy and Wu [43] divided L. fauriana into three chemotypes: amorphane (I), chiloscyphane (II), and eudesmane (III).…”

“…The remaining compounds were inactive (IC 50 > 40 µM). Chemotaxonomically, these eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids with hydroxyl groups at C-6 or C-7 can be found in the genera Chiloscyphus [6][7][8], Lepidozia (Lepidoziaceae) [20][21][22][23][24], Bazzania (Lepidoziaceae) [25], etc. Chiloscyphane-type sesquiterpenoids [9] have not been isolated from C. polyanthus var.…”
