EuBrewNet – A European Brewer network (COST Action ES1207), an overview

Abstract: Abstract. COST Action ES1207, EuBrewNet, was proposed to coordinate Brewer Spectrophotometer measurements of ozone, spectral UV and aerosol optical depth (AOD-UV) in the UV within Europe, and unite the ozone, UV and AOD communities, through a formally managed European Brewer Network capable of delivering a consistent, spatially 10 homogeneous European data resource, significant for the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the World Ozone and UV Data Centre (WOUDC), the International Ozone Commission (IO3C)… Show more

“…It is however also obvious that there is a need to improve the accuracy of measurements of AOD in the UV, in order to achieve more reliable SSA and AAOD, since their uncertainties are currently very large. The recent progress in the QA/QC procedures of Brewer measurements [107], and in particular the improvement of the AOD retrieval [108], may result to further reduction of uncertainties in the future.…”

“…At the Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E, Izaña Atmospheric Research Center, Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, Spain; http://rbcce.aemet.es/), and as part of the activities carried out at the WMO-CIMO Testbed for Aerosols and Water Vapor Remote Sensing Instruments (Izaña, Spain), we have implemented an AOD algorithm for the instruments integrated in EUBREWNET (COST Action ES1207, "a European Brewer Network"; Rimmer et al, 2018; http://www.eubrewnet.org/cost1207), which is comprised of close to 50 Brewer spectrophotometers. Most of these Brewer instruments operate in Europe and adjacent areas, although some located farther away, for example in South America and Australia, have also joined the network.…”

“…It is also worth noting that the shortest wavelength provided by the AOD product of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET; https: //aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov/), one of the most used sources for ground-based aerosol data, is 340 nm, which makes Brewer AOD data in the 300-320 nm range a useful complement. At the Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E, Izaña Atmospheric Research Center, Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, Spain; http://rbcce.aemet.es/), and as part of the activities carried out at the WMO-CIMO Testbed for Aerosols and Water Vapor Remote Sensing Instruments (Izaña, Spain), we have implemented an AOD algorithm for the instruments integrated in EUBREWNET (COST Action ES1207, "a European Brewer Network"; Rimmer et al, 2018; http://www.eubrewnet.org/cost1207), which is comprised of close to 50 Brewer spectrophotometers.
