Etymological, legal and cultural aspects of the use of the terms “citizenship” and “nationality” in the German Empire

Abstract

Terminological pairs “citizen” and “subject”, “citizenship” and “nationality” attract the attention of researchers in various scientific fields traditionally. This circumstance is due, among other things, to the historical variability of the filling of the content of these categories, which depends on the form of government, the political regime, cultural ideas, and other factors. The purpose of the work is the study of the dynamic development of semantics, political, legal, and cultural practices of the concepts of “citizen” and “subject” in the German Empire.
