“…This assumption is based on the fact that Protopterus, the African lungfish, and Neoceratodus, the Australian lungfish, vary greatly in the characteristics of their olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium of Protopterus contains numerous microvillous as well as ciliated receptor cells [Derivot et al, 1979], but Neoceratodus has only a few ciliated receptor cells [Hansen et al, 1994] that escaped detection in an earlier study by Theisen [1972]. Similarly, we might have overlooked crypt cells if few are present or are restricted to a small area of epithelium.…”

“…Although the ultrastructure of the OE has previously been reported in several species of lungfish (Theisen,1972; Derivot et al,1979; Hansen et al,1994), the ultrastructure of the recess epithelium has not been previously described. In accordance with the earlier reports by Derivot et al (1979) and Hansen et al (1994), the ultrastructure of the lamellar OE shared characteristics with the OE of ordinary teleosts (Hansen and Zielinski,2005). On the other hand, our studies have shown that the ultrastructure of the recess epithelium is considerably different from that of the lamellar OE in that the recess epithelium contained microvillous sensory cells but not ciliated sensory cells.…”

“…Lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis, Petromyzontidae), may possess only ciliated receptor ceils (ThornhiU, 1967), and cartilaginous fishes possess only microvillar receptor cells (Theisen et al, 1986;Zeiske et al, 1987Zeiske et al, , 1992. Only microvillar receptor cells are present in Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri, Ceratodontidae) (Theisen, 1972), while only ciliated receptor cells are found in African lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri, Ceratodontidae) (Theisen,i972), while only ciliated receptor ceils are found in African lungfish (Protopterus annectens, Protopteridae) (Derivot et al, 1979). Thus limited data indicate that no clear distribution pattern of olfactory receptor cell types emerges across fish species.…”
