Résumé. -L'état physiologique des poissons a été estimé, pour une part, par l'évaluation mensuelle, au cours de quatre années (1984, 1989, 1990, 1991), de caractéristiques morphophysiologiques et de la composition somatique chez deux espèces différant par leur régime alimentaire : la perche et le gardon. Les valeurs obtenues ont démontré qu'il y a certaines années (1984, 1989), en été, un ralentissement de la croissance pondérale, une diminution ou un arrêt de l'accrétion protéique accompagné d'une modification de la concentration d'acides aminés ainsi qu'une chute de la teneur en lipides somatiques. Ces résultats indiquent nettement l'existence, dans la retenue de Pareloup, de conditions nutritionnelles plus ou moins favorables aux populations pisciaires, durant la période estivale. Par ailleurs, la détermination de paramètres sanguins, au cours d'un cycle annuel (1992)(1993), chez plusieurs espèces de poissons (brème, chevesne, brochet, sandre, perche) a révélé que si la valeur de l'hématocrite, la cholestérolémie, la triglycéridémie et la protéinémie sont, d'une manière générale, relativement stables, la glycémie varierait avec la photopériode et le taux d'insuline circulante serait en relation avec le cycle sexuel, pour la plupart des espèces.Mots-clés. -Poissons, retenue, composition somatique, paramètres sanguins.Abstract. -The physiological state of fish was first assessed by monthly evaluation in four years (1 984, 1989, 1990, 1991) of certain morphophysiological characteristics and of somatic composition in two species (perch and roach) with different dietary habits. In 1984 and 1989, a slowing down in weight gain, a decrease or an interruption in protein accretion associated with changes in amino acid contents, and a fall in somatic lipid levels were observed in summer. These results clearly point to dietary conditions 258 F. Vellas et al.in Pareloup Reservoir which are more or less favorable to fish populations during this period. In addition, blood parameter rneasurernents, carried out frorn 1992 to 1993 in various fish species (bream, chub, pike, pike-perch, perch), generally showed relatively unchanged values for hematocrit and plasma cholesterol, triglyceride and protein contents, while plasma glucose levels appeared dependent on the photoperiod and circulating insulin rates on the reproductive cycle, for most species.

“…Roach feed preferentially during the day (Persson 1983;Jamet et al 1990) and generally present an opportunistic feeding behavior: they feed on plankton, macrophytes, benthos, and sediment (Niederholzer and Hofer 1980;Persson 1983Persson , 1987Jamet et al 1990;Michel and Oberdorff 1995). Therefore, roach are located, on the one hand, in the upper water stratum (1-6 m), where plankton density is the greatest in Lake Pareloup (Francisco and Rey 1994), and, on the other hand, near the bottom, in warm shallow areas, mainly composed of mud with patches of filamentous algae and macrophytes, which constitute an important food item for roach during summer (Prejs and Jackowska 1978;Persson 1983;Michel and Oberdorff 1995). The present work describes the development and validation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) by comparison with classical and more advanced parametric and nonparametric statistical modeling methods such as Multiple Regression (MR), Generalized Additive Models (GAM), and Alternating Conditional Expectations (ACE) to estimate spatial distribution of fish in a mesotrophic reservoir. The modeling approaches were developed and tested using 60 hydroacoustic transects covering the whole lake. Each transect was divided into 100-m-long sections, constituting a total of 732 sampling units. For each of them, the relationships between topology, chemical characteristics, and fish abundance were studied. The models had six independent topological (i.e., depth, distance from the bank, slope, and stratum) and chemical (i.e., temperature and dissolved oxygen) variables and one dependent output variable (fish density, FD). The data matrix was divided into two parts. The first contained units where FD was nonnil (i.e., 399 sampling units), and the second contained only cases without fish (i.e., 333 sampling units). Model training and testing procedures were run on the first submatrix after log(FD ϩ 1) transformation. As linear MR results were not satisfactory (r 2 ϭ 0.42 in the training set, and r 2 ϭ 0.51 in the testing set) compared with ANN (r 2 ϭ 0.81 in the training set, and r 2 ϭ 0.77 in the testing set), we tried nonlinear transformations of the variables such as logarithmic, lowess (for the GAM), and an optimal nonlinear transformation using the SAS Transreg procedure (for the ACE model), but the determination coefficients remained clearly lower than those obtained using ANN (r 2 ϭ 0.60 in the training set for ACE, and r 2 ϭ 0.66 in the training set for GAM). The results of a second test on the nil submatrix stressed that, compared with other statistical techniques, ANN and, to a certain extent, GAM models were able to clearly define the potential FDs in samples where no fish were actually found. The model showed, on the basis of the topological and chemical variables taken into account, that the predicted potential FDs in the surface stratum are higher than in the underlying stratum. Finally, on the basis of the sensitivity analyses performed on the ANN and GAM results, we established relationships between FDs and the six environmental variables. Our results exhibit a clear summer habitat preferendum, the fish (predominantly roach) being located mainly in the surface stratum, in the warm shallow littoral areas. These observations led us to discuss the ecological significance of such a fish distribution, which may be due to a trade-off between feeding, predation avoidance, and endogenous fish requirements.Hydroacoustics is a well-established and recognized technique for the assessment and management of aquatic resources (Thorne 1983). La retenue de Pareloup a été étudiée depuis 1983. En 1993, elle a été entièrement vidangée ce qui a permis d'étudier l'effet de cette perturbation sur l'écosystème. Ce papier fait la synthèse de l'ensemble des données recueillies depuis le début de l'étude, et décrit l'évolution avant et après la vidange, des variables physico-chimiques et du peuplement phytoplanctonique. Un suivi de 16 ans permet de s'affranchir des années exceptionnelles et de voir à long terme comment les conditions environnementales et l'écosystème évoluent. Les concentrations de nitrates ont augmenté en 1986 dans l'ensemble du bassin versant et dans la retenue. Elles sont en légère augmentation, ou stabilisées selon les entrées, les années suivantes. L'accroissement des concentrations de silice et de nitrates observées dans la retenue après la vidange ont pour origine l'augmentation des apports liée à trois années pluvieuses et non la vidange elle-même. Le fonctionnement de l'écosystème a été fortement perturbé l'année qui a suivit la vidange : disparition des espèces dominantes du phytoplancton et développement d'espèces jusqu'alors peu abondantes. L'éco-système a ensuite retrouvé son cycle initial dès 1995. La diminution du temps de séjour semble favoriser le développement des diatomées centrales {Aulacoseira sp.) au détriment d'Astèrionella formosa. Compte tenu du rôle d'A formosa dans le piégeage du phosphore par sédimentation, la dominance d'Aulacoseira certaines années pourrait perturber l'évolution estivale de la retenue. Lake Pareloup has been studied since 1983. In 1993 it was completely drained, providing an opportunity to study the effect of this disturbance on the ecosystem. This paper gives a synthesis of all data collected since thé beginning óf4he study.and describes the physico-chemical variables and phytoplankton population before, and subsequent to, drainage. The results of monitoring over a 16 year period provide a long-term overview of environmental conditions and ecosystem development, compensating for undue disturbance in data from exceptional years. Nitrate concentrations increased slightly in 1986 in the watershed and in the lake, but stabilised in the following years. The observed post-drainage increased concentrations of silica and nitrates in the lake is attributed to increased inflow during three years of exceptional rainfall and not to the drainage itself. Ecosystem function was strongly disturbed in the year following drainage, with the replacement of the dominant phytoplanktonic species by species previously not very abundant.
